The DMV Grift That Governor Katie Hobbs Slammed Into Reverse đŸš—đŸ’„

Arizona politics just tried to turn the DMV into a fundraising arm for a political organization
. and it backfired spectacularly. Governor Katie Hobbs shut it down with a veto that exposed one of the most brazen little grifts to roll through a state legislature in a while. 😏

Politics occasionally produces moments so shameless you almost have to admire the audacity
. almost. This week’s entry in the “Are they serious?” category came out of Arizona.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs just vetoed a bill that would have turned state license plates into rolling advertisements for Charlie Kirk. Yes
. an official government plate designed to funnel money to Turning Point USA. The plan was simple: charge drivers $25 for the plate, skim $17 off the top, and send it straight to the organization. A nice little side hustle
. except TPUSA already hauled in about $84 million in 2024. Somehow they’ll survive without shaking down motorists at the DMV.

The comedy gets better. The bill didn’t actually name TPUSA. Instead it described a mysterious nonprofit founded in 2012 that promotes “traditional values” and runs a “grassroots campus network.” Translation: they tried the legislative equivalent of wearing fake glasses and a mustache and hoping nobody would notice. Hobbs noticed. In her veto message she basically said government services like license plates shouldn’t be turned into partisan billboards. Imagine that
. the DMV not doubling as a political fundraising arm.

Cue the predictable outrage machine. Senator Jake Hoffman declared Kirk a “global civil rights leader,” which is the sort of sentence that makes historians reach for aspirin. Andy Biggs called the veto “petty,” and Kari Lake sprinted toward the nearest camera like it was the last helicopter out of Saigon.

Here’s the part that makes the whole stunt look even sillier. Arizona already has specialty plates for things like public television and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Helping sick kids get a wish is one thing. Funding a political operation that spent years demonizing immigrants and stirring campus culture wars is
 well
a slightly different category of charity.

And Arizona isn’t the only place where the branding machine is running. Other states are proposing roads, plazas, and university monuments tied to Kirk. This isn’t mourning
. it’s marketing. They’re turning a political figure into a taxpayer-subsidized franchise.

Hobbs simply said no.

Sometimes the most radical act in modern politics is just refusing to let government become someone’s fundraising scheme
. especially one that would have literally put propaganda on the back of every car in the parking lot. 🚗
