The DMV Grift That Governor Katie Hobbs Slammed Into Reverse đđ„
Arizona politics just tried to turn the DMV into a fundraising arm for a political organizationâŠ. and it backfired spectacularly. Governor Katie Hobbs shut it down with a veto that exposed one of the most brazen little grifts to roll through a state legislature in a while. đ

Politics occasionally produces moments so shameless you almost have to admire the audacityâŠ. almost. This weekâs entry in the âAre they serious?â category came out of Arizona.
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs just vetoed a bill that would have turned state license plates into rolling advertisements for Charlie Kirk. YesâŠ. an official government plate designed to funnel money to Turning Point USA. The plan was simple: charge drivers $25 for the plate, skim $17 off the top, and send it straight to the organization. A nice little side hustleâŠ. except TPUSA already hauled in about $84 million in 2024. Somehow theyâll survive without shaking down motorists at the DMV.
The comedy gets better. The bill didnât actually name TPUSA. Instead it described a mysterious nonprofit founded in 2012 that promotes âtraditional valuesâ and runs a âgrassroots campus network.â Translation: they tried the legislative equivalent of wearing fake glasses and a mustache and hoping nobody would notice. Hobbs noticed. In her veto message she basically said government services like license plates shouldnât be turned into partisan billboards. Imagine thatâŠ. the DMV not doubling as a political fundraising arm.
Cue the predictable outrage machine. Senator Jake Hoffman declared Kirk a âglobal civil rights leader,â which is the sort of sentence that makes historians reach for aspirin. Andy Biggs called the veto âpetty,â and Kari Lake sprinted toward the nearest camera like it was the last helicopter out of Saigon.
Hereâs the part that makes the whole stunt look even sillier. Arizona already has specialty plates for things like public television and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Helping sick kids get a wish is one thing. Funding a political operation that spent years demonizing immigrants and stirring campus culture wars is⊠well⊠a slightly different category of charity.
And Arizona isnât the only place where the branding machine is running. Other states are proposing roads, plazas, and university monuments tied to Kirk. This isnât mourningâŠ. itâs marketing. Theyâre turning a political figure into a taxpayer-subsidized franchise.
Hobbs simply said no.
Sometimes the most radical act in modern politics is just refusing to let government become someoneâs fundraising schemeâŠ. especially one that would have literally put propaganda on the back of every car in the parking lot. đ
