Howard Lutnick left his job running Cantor Fitzgerald to become Commerce Secretary. His sons now help run that same company. While Lutnick was publicly defending and promoting Trump-era tariffs, Cantor was quietly offering deals to companies that had paid those tariffs.

What kind of deals? Cantor reportedly offered to buy the rights to potential tariff refunds from businesses. Imagine a company paid $10 million in tariffs and was suing to get that money back. Cantor would step in and say, “We’ll give you a few million now, and if the courts strike down the tariffs later, we collect the full refund.” It’s basically Wall Street betting on a legal outcome.

Then the courts struck down major parts of the tariff regime. That means those refund claims suddenly became much more valuable. So critics are asking: was Lutnick pushing a policy that his family’s firm was financially positioned to profit from either way? Even if no laws were broken, it smells like a conflict of interest to a lot of people.
