JACK SMITH TO TRUMP--- THREATS WON’T SILENCE ME
Donald Trump may believe threatening the people who investigated him will frighten them into silence .... Jack Smith apparently didn't get the memo. Smith went before the Senate and made his position unmistakable: the threats won't shut him up, and he still stands behind the cases his office brought against Trump.
Donald Trump spent years raging about the people who investigated him, and now the investigator himself is the target. Jack Smith walked into the Senate and essentially said: THREATEN ME ALL YOU WANT. I’M NOT SHUTTING UP.
Smith told senators he would not “be silenced” by threats of prosecution and said he still stands behind the federal criminal cases his office brought against Trump. He testified that his decisions were based on the evidence, not Trump’s political party or beliefs, and that he would have made the same charging decision against a Democrat presented with the same facts.
Republicans accused Smith of abusing his authority, conducting politically motivated investigations and improperly obtaining phone records connected to GOP lawmakers. Smith defended the subpoenas as legitimate investigative steps related to efforts to delay certification of the 2020 election.
Then came a moment that perfectly captured the circus. Sen. Eric Schmitt tried to connect Smith to an Atlanta basketball game and Fani Willis .... except Smith had attended an Iowa HAWKEYES women’s basketball game in Maryland. Hawkeyes. Not the Atlanta Hawks. Apparently the United States Senate briefly became the world's most expensive episode of Are You Smarter Than a Sports Bar?
But underneath the comedy is something deadly serious. A former federal prosecutor is telling Congress that threats of prosecution are being directed at people who investigated a president. Whether you agree with every decision Smith made or not, THAT should concern anyone who gives a damn about an independent justice system.
The rule cannot become: Investigate my opponent .... HERO. Investigate me .... CRIMINAL.
Smith's Trump cases never reached final jury verdicts. The federal prosecutions were ultimately dropped after Trump returned to office under longstanding Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president. So Americans never received a jury's final judgment on those federal charges. But Smith isn't retracting his conclusions, apologizing for investigating Trump or pretending threats of retaliation are normal.
The principle here shouldn't require a law degree: No president should get to turn the Justice Department into his personal revenge department. Because the moment prosecutors start asking, “Will the president destroy my life if I investigate him?” instead of “What does the evidence show?” .... we've got a hell of a lot bigger problem than Jack Smith.
